The Lead Mini Ball
Basically the Mini Ball was smaller and could be dropped down into the barrel. When the gun was fired, gases expanded the base of the ball, allowing it to travel down the grooves of the gun. This allowed the gun to fire more accurately, and be reloaded more quicly.
This allowed soldiers in the civil war to kill eachother a lot more efficiently. Which is both a good and a bad thing. This is just one more invention by man to make kililng eachother easier.
I have watched shows saying that the mini ball changed the war and this is a good and bad thing like you said. While it was a great advancement in weapon technology it also lead to the killing of many more soldiers
ReplyDeleteIsn't it "minie ball"?
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to see how so many great technological advancements go toward warfare. Just think of all the money the DOD spends to develop new weapons and technology. How well could that money be spent in other areas?
ReplyDeleteI like this topic. Part of the reason the Civil War was so bloody is because of not only these weapons but also the tactics each side used. Men would march in in lines of fire and engage at close ranges just like in the days of the revolution. Those guns were designed to kill at 300 yards and they were engaging at 100 so is the fault of man is not just the technology but also the failure to adapt to said technology.
